Reflecting on Moral Courage

An abridged history of the Trump presidency

The United States of America has had quite a journey since the inauguration of Donald Trump as president on January 20, 2017. I remember the complex emotions of that day: witnessing the peaceful transition of power from one government to another inspired sober awe; still wrestling with the knowledge that a credibly accused serial sex offender was ascending to the highest political office of the land invoked a confused stupor. My facebook feed was quite busy that day, as I had taken the occasion to commemorate the infamous recording of Trump talking to Billy Bush.

I’m not sure what I learned from sharing those words on such an historic day. A number of Christian friends condemned my action of publishing the video and the remarks. The comments became a strange mix of support and argument around whether or not we should forget or forgive the president his past. The lesson now, as it was then, is that Trump’s narcissism has never been a secret and is dangerous in a man with the powers of the executive branch. What causes concern is how prudent it has become to sweep Trump’s misdeeds under the rug to avoid the discomfort rather than expose the hypocrisy and injustice.
