My experience at AWARE 2019, a conference to raise awareness of human trafficking in Mississippi

The human race has always endured levels of suffering, but these days it seems there is more suffering than endurance. I witnessed the ripples of some of the deepest wounds in humanity in the hearts and impassioned pleas from people on the front lines of human trafficking. AWARE 2019 was held at Fondren Church Thursday, July 25 to bring awareness to the problems faced in the efforts to reduce and prevent trafficking. Daniel Hicks, Communications Director at the church, opened the conference asking the audience for understanding in the midst of great pain.

Lindsay Simmons represents Mississippians Against Human Trafficking. She cites two sub-types of human trafficking: sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Numerous living conditions and life events contribute to the causes of sex trafficking, so being aware of them in the lives of your loved ones is critical. For example: children living in foster homes are sometimes targeted for trafficking; abuse; neglect; lack of adoration; family structural issues, especially when due to divorce; and especially poverty.
